Not all whites are the same, and the right one can make you glow in every wedding photo. Cool seasons look best in crisp, pearly and silvery whites, while warm seasons shine in ivory, cream and champagne.

This guide pulls from The Stylery's Wedding Edit Bride Guide. It covers your best dress whites and blush tones by season, the metals and fabrics that suit you, and how to keep your veil and bridal party in harmony.

Warm, neutral and cool whites

Wedding whites fall into three families:

  • Warm whites have a golden or creamy base: ivory, alabaster, buttercream, linen and champagne.
  • Neutral whites sit in between: soft white, rice, stone and bone.
  • Cool whites have a blue, gray or pink base: pure white, paper white, frost, pearl and silver.

Designers don't use standard color names, so one brand's "ivory" can be another's "soft white." That's why it helps to compare the actual fabric against your swatch fan rather than trusting the label.

Winter brides

Winter has a cool or neutral-cool undertone and medium to high contrast.

  • Best whites: pure white, soft white, pearl, cotton, snow, paper white, frost, cool grey, silver, lace, salt and rice.
  • Blush and nude options: icy pink, light blush, blush, icy violet, lilac, mauve, cool taupe, nude and stone.
  • Metals: silver, white silver and rose champagne.
  • Finish: matte, sheen and shine all work, so satin, mikado, taffeta and brocade are great options alongside silk, chiffon and lace.

Tips for dress shopping

  • Bring your swatch fan. Hold it against the dress to see whether the white truly harmonizes with your palette, whatever it's called on the tag.
  • Watch the embellishments. Beading and lace change how a dress reads. Silver beading makes a dress look more gray-toned than ivory lace does.
  • Consider a darker colorway for detail. A slightly deeper base can make lace or embroidery stand out with more contrast.
  • Match your veil's undertone to your dress so the two look seamless together.
  • Keep your bridal party in harmony. Bridesmaid dresses in your undertone help your dress look its best next to them in photos.

Universal colors for your bridal party

Some colors flatter almost everyone, which makes them easy choices for bridesmaids and groomsmen. They also sit well next to any dress white.

Try soft white, stone, warm pink, periwinkle, medium purple, warm plum, aubergine, teal blue, medium turquoise, emerald turquoise, medium navy, medium gray, medium charcoal, chocolate or mahogany.

Color is one piece of the picture. Your dress silhouette, neckline, hairstyle, veil and headpiece also shape how balanced and polished your look feels. We can talk through these in a Kibbe style analysis or styling session.
